Vehicle basics

Know the manual, maintenance schedule, and when to call for roadside help.

Skill 4.3 · About 25 minutes to begin

Hand tools and repair supplies laid out on a tidy workbench

Vehicles get crews to adventure. Learn maintenance skills on a practice car in a parking lot, not on a busy highway alone.

Before you begin

Bring along

  • Owner's manual
  • Adult-approved practice equipment

Support & boundaries

An adult approves the task and supervises heat, sharp tools, and equipment. Follow the exact equipment instructions. Stop if the task exceeds your training or permission.

01 / Learn

Understand the skill

  • Park off road, hazards on, parking brake set before any roadside work.
  • Jack points are specific — use owner manual or leader demonstration.
  • Battery and jump-start procedures vary by vehicle. Use a qualified adult and the exact owner instructions; do not improvise from a generic terminal sequence.
  • Identify fluid information in the owner manual with an adult. Never open a hot cooling system or touch unfamiliar components.
  • Call roadside assistance or leaders when unsure — safety over pride.

02 / Practice

Try it, step by step

  1. 1

Locate spare, jack, and lug wrench in family or leader vehicle.

  2. 2

Locate model-specific tire-change instructions with an adult; any demonstration must use a suitable planned site and the specified tools.

  3. 3

Do not practice jacking on a slope or use improvised supports. Never get underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.

  4. 4

Wear visible vest on roadside work.

  5. 5

Log when oil was last changed — leaders may track trip vans separately.

Common mistakes to avoid
  • Proving you can change it right there.
  • Treating a successful practice attempt as permission to skip the supervision or checks for a real task.

Your call

A tire fails beside fast traffic. What should guide your next action?

Help someone learn

  • Schedule a skills day with parents who can donate driveway time.
  • Keep gloves and reflective vests in trip van kit.
  • Assign who calls for help if roadside fix fails.

Start together, then let the learner take responsibility at an appropriate level. Offer a shorter task, a different role, or more practice time when useful. Review the demonstration criteria together; advanced practice never removes supervision requirements.

Reference shelf

Original program lessons informed by these references. Equipment manuals, current local rules, and qualified instruction govern technical practice.

04 / Apply · In Action

Know the practice vehicle

With the owner and engine off, find the manual, emergency equipment, tire information, and maintenance schedule.

What success looks like

Explain where to find model-specific instructions and when to call roadside assistance.

Talk it through

What makes a roadside location unsuitable for a repair?

05 / Teach · Take it further

Observe a qualified adult's planned maintenance demonstration in a safe location.
