2 / Taking care of yourself

Laundry and caring for clothes

Read care labels, wash a load, and put everything away.

Skill 2.4 · About 25 minutes to begin

Clothes, hygiene supplies, shoes, fruit, water, and an alarm clock

Looking after clothes keeps you comfortable and extends their useful life. Learning your household's machines and each garment's care label is more useful than memorizing one setting for everything.

Before you begin

Bring along

  • Personal supplies for the task
  • A simple written plan

Support & boundaries

Choose an age-appropriate task with your leader or trusted adult. Outdoor practice follows the approved route, buddy, and supervision plan; adapt the challenge to your abilities.

01 / Learn

Understand the skill

  • Care labels override a general routine; wool, waterproof layers, and delicate items may need special care.
  • Detergent is concentrated: follow its label and keep it away from younger children.
  • Some stains set with heat, so check before using a dryer.

02 / Practice

Try it, step by step

  1. 1

Empty pockets and read garment labels. Separate items as your household and fabric instructions require.

  2. 2

Ask an adult to show the machine controls, detergent amount, and safe loading level.

  3. 3

Choose a compatible wash cycle. Never mix cleaning products.

  4. 4

Check stains and follow drying instructions. Clean the dryer lint screen as taught before the load.

  5. 5

Fold or hang dry items, match socks, and return everything to its place.

Common mistakes to avoid
  • The setting used for every other load.
  • Treating a successful practice attempt as permission to skip the supervision or checks for a real task.

Help someone learn

  • Use a practice garment for reading labels and sorting.
  • Help someone make a simple machine-specific checklist.

Start together, then let the learner take responsibility at an appropriate level. Offer a shorter task, a different role, or more practice time when useful. Review the demonstration criteria together; advanced practice never removes supervision requirements.

A load from start to finish

With permission, wash a compatible load using the garment labels and your household's equipment instructions.

What success looks like

Explain your sorting and settings, then put the entire load away.

Talk it through

Which label changed how you handled an item?

05 / Teach · Take it further

Make a short checklist for a different household member using the same machine.
