Keeping your word

Make commitments you can keep, and communicate early when plans change.

Skill 1.1 · About 25 minutes to begin

A mentor and youth listening and planning together at an outdoor table

Dependability grows through small promises: bringing the cooking pot, arriving on time, or finishing cleanup when nobody is watching. Your crew should know what they can count on you to do.

Before you begin

Bring along

  • Notebook
  • Practice partner

Support & boundaries

Use fictional situations and choose what you share. You may pass or speak privately with a trusted adult. Unsafe behavior or a serious concern needs adult support.

01 / Learn

Understand the skill

  • A useful commitment names a task, a person, and a deadline.
  • Saying yes before checking your time can create work for someone else.
  • A changed plan needs a message before the deadline, not an explanation afterward.

02 / Practice

Try it, step by step

  1. 1

Choose one real responsibility this week. Write what finished looks like and when it is needed.

  2. 2

Check your calendar, equipment, and transportation before agreeing.

  3. 3

Tell the person relying on you: I will do this by this time. Ask them to confirm the details.

  4. 4

Set a reminder early enough to act. If a problem appears, explain it and propose a realistic alternative.

  5. 5

Finish the task, check its quality, and tell the person it is done.

Common mistakes to avoid
  • Wait until the meeting to explain.
  • Treating a successful practice attempt as permission to skip the supervision or checks for a real task.

Help someone learn

  • Let a younger member own a manageable job instead of taking over.
  • Ask what support they need and agree on a check-in time.
  • Discuss missed commitments privately and focus on the next action.

Start together, then let the learner take responsibility at an appropriate level. Offer a shorter task, a different role, or more practice time when useful. Review the demonstration criteria together; advanced practice never removes supervision requirements.

Reference shelf

Original program lessons informed by these references. Equipment manuals, current local rules, and qualified instruction govern technical practice.

04 / Apply · In Action

One promise, followed through

Own one useful job for the next meeting. Agree on the result and deadline with the person relying on you.

What success looks like

Show the finished work and explain how you kept the other person informed.

Talk it through

Which part of your plan made follow-through easier?

05 / Teach · Take it further

Help a newer member plan their own commitment without doing it for them.
