Day hiking
Pace, hydration, trail etiquette, and group spacing.
Skill 3.16 · About 25 minutes to begin

Day hikes build fitness and teamwork without the weight of full backpacking.
Before you begin
Bring along
- Trip packing list
- Suitable footwear
- Water and food
Support & boundaries
Choose an age-appropriate task with your leader or trusted adult. Outdoor practice follows the approved route, buddy, and supervision plan; adapt the challenge to your abilities.
01 / Learn
Understand the skill
- Start slower than you think — warm muscles prevent injury.
- Downhill hurts knees — shorten steps and use poles if leaders issue them.
- Yield to uphill hikers on narrow trail when safe.
- Stay in sight or sound of your assigned buddy pair.
- Turn back before exhaustion — leaders set turnaround times.
02 / Practice
Try it, step by step
- 1
Eat a real breakfast; sip water every 20–30 minutes.
- 2
Use trekking poles on steep or wet trails if available.
- 3
Announce when passing: “On your left” with space.
- 4
Take short breaks on durable ground, not on fragile plants.
- 5
Log miles and how you felt for training records.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Let them catch up at the next distant stop.
- Treating a successful practice attempt as permission to skip the supervision or checks for a real task.
Your call

Help someone learn
- Set pace by conversation test — able to talk without gasping.
- Assign front, middle, and sweep with radios or whistle signals if needed.
- Plan water stops before the group is thirsty.
Start together, then let the learner take responsibility at an appropriate level. Offer a shorter task, a different role, or more practice time when useful. Review the demonstration criteria together; advanced practice never removes supervision requirements.
