AI and your own judgment
Use AI to extend your abilities while keeping responsibility for the result.
Skill 4.7 · About 25 minutes to begin

When a tool can produce a polished answer in seconds, the important question becomes: is this useful, true, and appropriate? Your knowledge, taste, curiosity, and ability to work with people help you answer that question. Keep learning the underlying skill so you can recognize good work.
Before you begin
Bring along
- Notebook or local practice tools
- Fictional sample task
- Calculator and primary sources
Support & boundaries
Paper and on-page exercises need no AI account. For live tools, follow age requirements and parent, guardian, school, and program rules. Use fictional data; keep people in control of real decisions and external actions.
01 / Learn
Understand the skill
- Generative AI produces text, images, code, and other outputs from learned patterns. A fluent answer can still be invented, biased, outdated, or unsuitable.
- Taste means explaining what makes a result good for a particular person and purpose. Build it by studying strong examples, doing real work, and asking for feedback.
- AI capabilities and work opportunities change. Predictions about jobs are opinions about uncertain outcomes, not promises. Human accountability remains important.
02 / Practice
Try it, step by step
- 1
Choose a low-risk task, such as drafting a meeting agenda. Write your own first attempt before using a tool.
- 2
Define three observable qualities of a good result: includes setup time, names a responsible role, and fits the meeting length.
- 3
Compare two sample drafts against those qualities. Explain your choice with evidence rather than saying one sounds better.
- 4
If using an approved AI tool, request another draft and compare it with your own. Identify one useful idea and one weakness.
- 5
Decide what to keep, revise, or reject. Explain the final plan without reading the AI response.
- 6
Practice one underlying skill without AI, then discuss when the tool helped and when your own effort mattered most.

How I’m Preparing for the AI Revolution
Discussion starter: what makes good judgment valuable? Separate practical suggestions from uncertain forecasts. Includes adult language and adult financial examples; review with your mentor.
Watch on YouTube ↗Common mistakes to avoid
- Trust the polished explanation over your observation.
- Treating a successful practice attempt as permission to skip the supervision or checks for a real task.
Your call
An AI answer sounds confident but conflicts with what you observed. What next?

Help someone learn
- Use the linked video as a discussion starter about judgment, experimentation, and uncertain forecasts; it includes adult language and adult financial examples.
- Ask learners to distinguish a demonstrated capability, an opinion, and a prediction. Do not make a specific career forecast the lesson.
Start together, then let the learner take responsibility at an appropriate level. Offer a shorter task, a different role, or more practice time when useful. Review the demonstration criteria together; advanced practice never removes supervision requirements.

Choose the better agenda
Compare two fictional meeting agendas using three criteria you wrote before reviewing them. Improve the chosen draft.
What success looks like
Explain two edits and why the revised agenda would work for the crew.
Talk it through
Did polish distract you from whether the plan was useful?
