Know your home and when to stop

Find important information and recognize jobs for an adult or professional.

Skill 4.6 · About 25 minutes to begin

Hand tools, safety glasses, and a shirt ready for a small sewing repair

Being useful at home includes knowing what not to touch. Make a family readiness plan with an adult, using your own home's equipment and instructions.

Before you begin

Bring along

  • Approved hand tools or sewing kit
  • Practice material
  • Safe workspace

Support & boundaries

An adult approves the task and supervises heat, sharp tools, and equipment. Follow the exact equipment instructions. Stop if the task exceeds your training or permission.

01 / Learn

Understand the skill

  • Electrical panels, gas equipment, roofs, and pressurized systems are not practice projects.
  • Smoke or a suspected gas leak requires getting to safety and contacting emergency services from a safe location.
  • Keep household access details and emergency information private.

02 / Practice

Try it, step by step

  1. 1

Walk through the home with an adult to identify exits, the meeting place, and where emergency contacts are kept.

  2. 2

Locate smoke alarms, the water shutoff, and the electrical panel without operating equipment. Ask who is responsible for each.

  3. 3

Choose a safe maintenance job, such as checking flashlight batteries or tightening an approved cabinet handle with a hand screwdriver.

  4. 4

Select the correct tool, clear the area, and complete the task with the agreed supervision.

  5. 5

Check the result and return supplies. Report anything unexpected rather than improvising a repair.

Common mistakes to avoid
  • Try switches and equipment to find the problem.
  • Treating a successful practice attempt as permission to skip the supervision or checks for a real task.

Your call

You notice a smell that may be gas during a home walkthrough. What next?

Mentor notes & sources

Help someone learn

  • Use photos or mock equipment when a real installation would create risk.
  • Explain the boundary between observing, assisting, and operating.

Start together, then let the learner take responsibility at an appropriate level. Offer a shorter task, a different role, or more practice time when useful. Review the demonstration criteria together; advanced practice never removes supervision requirements.

Reference shelf

Original program lessons informed by these references. Equipment manuals, current local rules, and qualified instruction govern technical practice.
