Listening so people feel heard

Give attention, check your understanding, and ask before offering advice.

Skill 6.1 · About 25 minutes to begin

A small group having a thoughtful conversation outdoors

A useful teammate listens to understand. You do not have to agree with every opinion to treat the speaker respectfully.

Before you begin

Bring along

  • Fictional scenario cards
  • Practice partner

Support & boundaries

Use fictional situations and choose what you share. You may pass or speak privately with a trusted adult. Unsafe behavior or a serious concern needs adult support.

01 / Learn

Understand the skill

  • Listening includes words, tone, and the possibility that you misunderstood.
  • Eye contact is not comfortable for everyone; attention can be shown in other ways.
  • People sometimes want help solving a problem and sometimes want someone to listen.

Explore the idea

A conversation you can practice

Name the specific situation and what you need, without attacking the other person's character.

02 / Practice

Try it, step by step

  1. 1

Put distractions aside and ask whether now is a good time to talk.

  2. 2

Let a partner explain a harmless topic for one minute without interrupting.

  3. 3

Summarize in your own words and ask: Did I get that right?

  4. 4

Ask an open question, such as What was the hardest part?

  5. 5

Before advising, ask whether they want ideas or simply a listening ear. Switch roles.

Common mistakes to avoid
  • Explain why your interpretation is right.
  • Treating a successful practice attempt as permission to skip the supervision or checks for a real task.

Your call

Your partner says your summary missed their point. What next?

03 / Demonstrate

Use these prompts with a mentor. This practice checklist resets when you leave; record your overall stage below in the signed-in manual.

Help someone learn

  • Invite quieter voices without putting anyone on the spot.
  • Model changing your understanding when someone corrects you.

Start together, then let the learner take responsibility at an appropriate level. Offer a shorter task, a different role, or more practice time when useful. Review the demonstration criteria together; advanced practice never removes supervision requirements.

04 / Apply · In Action

Listen, then summarize

Take turns explaining a harmless recent challenge for one minute. The listener summarizes before offering advice.

What success looks like

The speaker confirms the summary or offers a correction that the listener accepts.

Talk it through

What did you learn only after asking a question?

05 / Teach · Take it further

Use the technique during your next crew planning discussion.
