Holiday flag placement and retrieval
Respectful display, weather calls, and neat yards.
Skill 7.2 · About 25 minutes to begin

Families hire us to honor holidays with flags in their yards. Precision and respect matter more than speed.
Before you begin
Bring along
- Approved work order
- Youth role checklist
- Water and appropriate clothing
Support & boundaries
Adult-led program activity with approved youth roles. Adults alone operate, load, and haul aerators and drive vehicles. Stay out of homes and clear of moving equipment.
01 / Learn
Understand the skill
- Use only provided stakes and flags — do not mix customer sets.
- Placement spot is usually front yard near walk — follow route card.
- Follow the scheduled retrieval plan; adults postpone or stop for lightning and other unsafe conditions.
- Damaged flags go to leaders — do not throw in customer trash without asking.
- Never enter a home or garage without explicit permission and adult present.
02 / Practice
Try it, step by step
- 1
Carry flags upright; do not drag on ground.
- 2
Step on sod carefully; avoid flower beds.
- 3
Straighten flag on stake; check from sidewalk for appearance.
- 4
Record completion in app or checklist per stop.
- 5
Stay clear of moving vehicles and follow the adult driver’s safe loading and unloading plan.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Make a new hole wherever it looks best.
- Treating a successful practice attempt as permission to skip the supervision or checks for a real task.

Help someone learn
- Sort flags by route the night before.
- Pair new member with experienced driver for first holiday.
- Weather cancel policy comes from leaders — communicate early to customers via office.
Start together, then let the learner take responsibility at an appropriate level. Offer a shorter task, a different role, or more practice time when useful. Review the demonstration criteria together; advanced practice never removes supervision requirements.
