Tents and shelters
Setup, stakes, rainflies, and care for shared tents.
Skill 3.6 · About 25 minutes to begin

Tents are teamwork. Fast, calm setup beats a rushed job in the rain.
Before you begin
Bring along
- Tent, pad, and sleeping bag
- Site rules
- Approved practice space
Support & boundaries
Choose an age-appropriate task with your leader or trusted adult. Outdoor practice follows the approved route, buddy, and supervision plan; adapt the challenge to your abilities.
01 / Learn
Understand the skill
- Read the pitch diagram before you pull poles out.
- Stake corners at a low angle; guylines matter in wind.
- Keep mud and boots outside the vestibule when possible.
- Never cook inside a tent — carbon monoxide and fire risk.
- Dry tents completely at home to prevent mold.
02 / Practice
Try it, step by step
- 1
Lay footprint or ground cloth without sticking out past the rainfly.
- 2
Assemble poles; clip body; stake downwind side first in breeze.
- 3
Tighten rainfly evenly; check ventilation.
- 4
Store sharp stakes in a bag so they do not tear the tent in the stuff sack.
- 5
Practice breakdown: shake dirt out, roll loosely, stuff sack.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Seal it away until the next trip.
- Treating a successful practice attempt as permission to skip the supervision or checks for a real task.

Help someone learn
- Pair one experienced and one newer member per tent.
- Time a setup drill at a meeting — celebrate improvement, not speed alone.
- Inspect returned tents and log damage on a shared sheet.
Start together, then let the learner take responsibility at an appropriate level. Offer a shorter task, a different role, or more practice time when useful. Review the demonstration criteria together; advanced practice never removes supervision requirements.
